Plans for George Street Redesign Progress

Over a number of years, GSA has been representing the interests of our members on the proposed redesign of George Street and the implementation of an operational plan for the area.

The City of Edinburgh Council is investing £32m, with £20million of this investment coming from Transport Scotland, to revitalise the street while embracing its much-loved heritage.  The proposed design will create a greener, safer, accessible place for everyone to enjoy.

It will be one of the first projects to emerge from the  City Centre Transformation – an ambitious 10-year strategy and delivery plan that seeks to provide a people-focused city centre, which is a desirable place to live, work and visit.

In October 2021, the Council appointed a team led by Atkins to progress the detailed designs for George Street.

Councillor Lesley Macinnes, transport and environment convener, the City of Edinburgh Council, said: “The appointment of Atkins to develop designs for the George Street and First New Town redesign marks a key stage in a transformational project for the city centre. Once delivered, this will create a world-class, well-connected and people-friendly thoroughfare, where businesses can thrive and the area’s unique heritage is celebrated. I look forward to seeing the scheme progress under the team’s expert guidance.”

The Team has been sharing design development with the Association at our regular meetings and is about to engage more widely with businesses on the detail of the operational plan.  We’ll keep members abreast of proposals!
